The IB DP Biology course is a part of Group 4 – sciences. The course designed to explore the living world across different scales, from the cellular level to the interactions within ecosystems. The course aims to develop students’ understanding of scientific methods and their ability to communicate scientific knowledge effectively. With the 2023 changes, the course emphasizes the “Nature of Science,” which provides students with insights into the workings of science in the 21st century, including ethical debates and limitations.
The IB Biology course follows a practical approach, allowing students to engage in designing investigations, collecting data, analyzing results, and collaborating with peers. These investigations can be conducted in laboratories or through the use of simulations and databases. Structure of the IB Biology Syllabus:
The Biology syllabus is offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).Â
- SL requires a minimum of 150 hours of studyÂ
- HL requires 240 hours of study
- The SL and HL courses cover common core content, and the HL students are required to study additional topics
